Primary Election Date Legislation
Discussion is ongoing regarding potential changes to Michigan’s primary election date. The focus continues to remain on 2027 and going forward. One proposal under consideration in the Senate includes the addition of a February special election date. No corresponding House legislation has been introduced at this time; however, discussions are expected to continue. The MAMC goal is to consolidate to two regularly scheduled elections: May and November.

Ballot Reprinting Proposal
Current law does not establish a cutoff date for ballot reprinting. A proposed bill would set a 55-day cutoff prior to an election. The bill sponsor has requested input from the Legislative Committee before advancing the legislation. The committee plans to engage in discussions with the CEO committee on this topic.

Term of Office Bill Package
Discussion on the Term of Office bill package is ongoing, with bipartisan considerations remaining a central challenge. While there is interest across parties in addressing the issue, differences in approach and priorities have made consensus difficult to achieve.

House Bills 4720, 5197, and 5198 – Foreign Interference
The bills require compliance with state requirements ensuring that no election-related funds are received from foreign sources. Additionally, local governments would be required to submit quarterly reports if they receive any funding for election administration.

Committee Spotlight: Election Equipment Funding
Election equipment funding is a key focus of the Legislative Committee this year. In response to upcoming state-mandated equipment requirements and associated costs, the legislative committee has established a subcommittee to develop an obtainable funding strategy. The estimated statewide funding need is approximately $91 million. The subcommittee has already met several times, begun engaging stakeholders, and initiated communication efforts to help educate state leaders on the scope and urgency of the funding need.

Stay tuned for future updates as these bills and proposals move through the legislative process.
